CEO Brief -
What a week. I am devastated that our country is torn apart and looks and feels the way it does. I am mad at the injustice in our systems and the racism that exists. I am so sad for Nashville, our community, and members, that have experienced so much; form the tornado, to COVID, to our budget situation, and now to try to confront and change far to many years of oppression and systematic racism, all while trying to make a living and live their lives.

I have heard from so many who have emotions like these and that run from anger, to fear, to exhaustion. I hear that the most, you are exhausted, and I totally get it, I am exhausted. But we can not stop. We have to keep going and confront and overcome all of these issues. Especially injustice and racism; discrimination, and hate are not ok, for LGBTQ+ people and for everyone else. We are committed to that here.
I hope you saw our statement on this on Monday, our silence on Tuesday, and our guidance on Wednesday.

I personally attended the protest Saturday, and then on Thursday. Thursdays event was so inspiring, I have never seen or felt the way I did in my 19 years of activism than I did marching through Nashville that day. The youth that organized this are committed and ready, we are in good hands. It was the energizing moment and hope that I needed to keep pushing. You can check out my personal posts on my social media if you want to see more. Thursday's event was also one off the most diverse events I have seen. I saw so many LGBTQ+ people, and many members there.

There were also a lot of other important developments you should be aware of. There was major news on PPP and a state program to help small businesses recover from the COVID shutdown.

Pride month started, Happy Pride, and there were so many announcements and events that came out. I talked to the media about some of them, we will be making many more and highlighting other events and programs next week, keep an eye on your inbox and our social and read more below. Read it all! There is a lot of exciting stuff happening!

Governor Lee announced a new relief program for Tennessee businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Tennessee Business Relief Program  will direct approximately $200 million in federal Coronavirus Relief Funds through the Department of Revenue directly to small businesses that qualify.

The Tennessee Business Relief Program amounts awarded will be based on the annual gross sales of the business.  More details will be posted on the Department of Revenue’s website in the coming days .

The COVID-19 situation changes hour by hour. We are continuing to post updates and connections to resources on our social media. Please follow us there for new and immediate information updates.

What We Did

Joe spoke with our member NewChannel 5 Nashville about Pride Month festivities this year. Virtual Pride events, the need for conversations to be on Black Lives Matters, and how to support the LGBTQ+ community are higlighted.

We celebrate the start of LGBTQ+ Pride month but our city, state, and nation are outraged by the racism we live with in our society. This same outrage was felt 51 years ago and we now celebrate it with Pride. Pride Month serves as a constant reminder of the LGBTQ+ movement’s initiative to combat discrimination and hate based on sexual orientation and gender identity, it is important that we stand in solidarity when a threat to justice is apparent.?

In honor of Pride Month, Mayor John Cooper had the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Historic Metro Courthouse covered in rainbow lights.

We shared resources for the many people who want to be an ally, or those who want to be a better ally. Continue to educate yourself.

We held our Network Connect- AM Brewing Up Business for June. Attendees observed a moment of silence for George Floyd and then discussed issues on race and discrimination in small groups. The connection and friendship was needed now more than ever. We hope you will join us for our next networking event.

Thursday's youth-led Black Lives Matter protest was inspiring to experience. Reports of 10-20,000 people gathered to march. Here is live coverage of the event.
