Classroom Connect: The History of Nashville's Queer-Owned Businesses

Tuesday, October 1, 2024 (11:30 AM - 12:30 PM) (CDT)

Description

Join the TN Pride Chamber and Nashville Queer History by kicking off October's LGBT+ History Month with an intimate peek into the history of Nashville's queer-owned businesses!

Get an introduction to Nashville’s LGBTQ past with Sarah Calise, founder and director of Nashville Queer History. Stories will include some of Nashville’s most influential queer-owned businesses and organizations of the past 100 years.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Sarah Calise (she/they) is a public historian and librarian dedicated to connecting people with their past and preserving important records through digital, written, and verbal storytelling. They have experience in a variety of communication tools, including digital collections development and management, creating and managing websites, writing public essays, physical and online exhibits, conducting and transcribing oral histories, instructing classes for K-12 schools and colleges, developing empowering public programs, and managing institutional social media accounts.

ABOUT NASHVILLE QUEER HISTORY:

Nashville Queer History is a community organization and digital portal whose mission is to research and share the LGBTQ history of Nashville and Middle Tennessee in hopes of inspiring local activism, education, and inclusion. NQH was founded in September 2021 by public historian Sarah Calise, and now has a group of volunteers and community partners who guide the research and projects. The resources on this site are not exhaustive, but meant to spark conversation and a movement toward actively documenting and preserving these important historical narratives. NQH is a also community partner of the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation, and sometimes receives financial, logistical, and labor support from this organization, particularly in the form of graduate student workers.

Follow NQH on Instagram, too! See behind-the-scenes work of the research and preservation process, get Nashville queer histories regularly posted in your Instagram feed, and interact with the NQH team.
